QUESTION: Should I order this bat stock/untouched or Professionally Broken In?
ANSWER: Brand new baseball and softball bats need to be broken in before they perform to their full potential. QUESTION: Should my 12 year old swing the Hype Fire -8 or the -10 in Little League Majors?
ANSWER: If your player is already squaring the ball up with a -10 and finishing the swing without slowing down, the -8 is the right move. The extra two ounces add carry without changing the swing. If they are still working to get the barrel out front against the better pitchers in the league, the -10 is the safer pick for one more season. A good test: swing a 30/22 Hype Fire -8 next to a 30/20 Hype Fire -10 in the cage. If bat speed looks the same, buy the -8. Most 12 year olds pass that test. Most 10 year olds do not.
QUESTION: Why does the Hype Fire USA use a different barrel than the Hype Fire USSSA?
ANSWER: Because the two rulebooks reward different things. The USSSA Hype Fire uses Easton's TCT barrel at 2-3/4 inches, built to push performance as high as the 1.15 BPF standard allows. The USA Hype Fire uses 3D Ropecoil Composite at 2-5/8 inches, built for a standard that caps peak performance. When every USA bat is limited to the same ceiling, the winning move is to make more of the barrel perform at that ceiling, which is exactly what the Ropecoil rope wrap is designed to do. Same Hype Fire name, same two-piece feel, but a barrel purpose-built for the league your player is actually in.
QUESTION: Is the Hype Fire -8 USA balanced or end loaded?
ANSWER: Easton rates the Hype Fire USA lineup as a light swing weight, and the -8 plays that way: quick through the zone with the barrel easy to control. The extra mass compared to a -10 shows up as more presence at contact rather than a heavier feel through the swing. It is not an end-loaded power bat, and it is not meant to be. For an 11 or 12 year old, a bat that swings light and hits heavy is the ideal combination, and that's what the -8 delivers.
