The -5 is the last stop before BBCOR, and Easton built the 2027 Dub Darkside -5 to make that stop count! It carries the most mass of any bat in the Dub lineup, five ounces under length at 30, 31, and 32 inches, and it puts that mass behind the most flexible barrel Easton makes for USSSA play. That combination is rarer than it sounds; most -5 bats feel heavy because they are heavy, and the hitter has to grow into them. The Dub Darkside -5 pairs its weight with a balanced swing profile and a double barrel that stays live across the whole hitting surface, so a strong 12 or 13 year old gets the mass without the drag and the forgiveness without giving up the pop. Then, hit by hit, the chrome front decal wears through to reveal the red Darkside graphic underneath. By the end of a season, the bat looks like it has been through one!
The reason the Dub can do this is 2X Double Barrel Construction. A thin outer barrel flexes along the full length of the hitting surface, and a lightweight inner barrel beneath it governs performance right at the USSSA 1.15 BPF limit. QUESTION: Is the Dub Darkside -5 still legal in USSSA 14U?
ANSWER: It depends on the event. As of January 1, 2026, USSSA's national standard for 14U is BBCOR -3 or wood, so the Dub Darkside -5 is not legal at USSSA 14U national events. Some state and local 14U events still permit a -5 USSSA bat, and 13U rules allow up to a -5, with some elite 13U events requiring a -5 or heavier. Always check your league and tournament rules before buying. If your player is headed into 14U national events or high school, a BBCOR bat is the one you want, and we can help you pick it.
QUESTION: Is the Dub Darkside -5 balanced or end loaded?
ANSWER: Balanced, which is unusual for a -5 and is a big part of why this bat works as a transition piece. Most heavy-drop bats push their weight toward the barrel, which adds power but makes the bat feel slow in the hands of a hitter who is not fully grown into it. Easton builds the entire Dub Darkside lineup, including the -5, with a balanced swing weight, so the mass is spread evenly and the barrel stays quick through the zone. The result is a -5 that hits with real weight behind it but swings closer to a -8 than you would expect. Hitters coming up from the Dub -8 will notice the extra mass at contact without feeling like they picked up a different bat.
QUESTION: Who should swing the Dub Darkside -5?
ANSWER: Strong 12U and 13U hitters who have outgrown a -8 and want to build the strength and timing for BBCOR. The test is simple: if the player can swing the -5 in the cage with the same bat speed and mechanics as their -8, they are ready. If their hands slow down or their timing goes late, one more season in the -8 is the better call. The Dub's balanced swing weight and flexible double barrel make it more forgiving than most -5 bats for a hitter who is on the edge, but it still rewards the player who has earned it.
