There is a moment in every travel ball hitter's development when the -10 stops being enough. The swing has gotten faster, the contact has gotten louder, and the ball keeps landing ten feet short of where it should. The 2027 Easton Dub Darkside -8 is built for that moment! It carries two more ounces of barrel mass than the -10 at the same length, and it puts that mass behind the most flexible barrel Easton makes for USSSA play. That combination is what makes the -8 Dub such a good transition bat: the extra weight turns hard contact into extra bases, and the double barrel keeps the hitting surface forgiving while a 11 or 12 year old is still learning to square up bigger pitching. And because it's the Darkside edition, the chrome front decal starts wearing through to a red Darkside graphic with every ball the hitter squares up. A bat that shows its work is a nice thing for a kid who is putting in the work.
The Dub's 2X Double Barrel Construction is the reason this bat stands apart. A thin outer barrel is free to flex along the full length of the hitting surface, and a lightweight inner barrel underneath governs performance right at the USSSA 1.15 BPF limit. On a single-wall bat, the one wall has to be stiff enough to hold the performance line and flexible enough to feel good, and it can only do so much of both. Splitting the jobs between two barrels is how the Dub gets more flex than any other USSSA bat in Easton's lineup and a sweet spot that runs closer to the end cap. ANSWER: Brand new baseball and softball bats need to be broken in before they perform to their full potential. QUESTION: Should my player swing the Dub Darkside -8 or the -10?
ANSWER: Bat speed decides it. If your player is already driving the ball with a -10 and finishing the swing without slowing down, the -8 adds carry without costing anything. If they're still working to get the barrel out front against good pitching, stay in the -10 for one more season. A quick cage test settles it: swing a 30/22 Dub -8 next to a 30/20 Dub -10. If the -8 swings just as fast, buy the -8. Most 12 year olds pass that test. Most 10 year olds do not. Both bats are built with a balanced swing weight and the same double barrel, so the only thing that changes is the mass.
QUESTION: How does a double barrel feel different from a regular composite bat?
ANSWER: The first thing hitters notice is the sound. A double barrel has a deeper, louder crack at contact than a single-wall composite because the outer barrel is flexing more. The second thing is the feel: because the outer barrel gives and the inner barrel supports it, contact feels softer and more forgiving even though the ball comes off hot, and mishits toward the end cap don't sting the way they do on a stiffer bat. Hitters who have swung Easton's double barrel fastpitch bats will recognize it immediately. Hitters coming from a single-wall bat usually take a round of batting practice to trust it, and then they don't want to go back!
QUESTION: What ages and lengths fit the Dub Darkside -8?
ANSWER: The -8 runs from 29 to 32 inches, which lines up with hitters roughly 11U through 13U. A 29 or 30 inch fits most 11 year olds, a 30 or 31 most 12 year olds, and a 31 or 32 most 13 year olds, with height and strength mattering more than age. Because the Dub's balanced swing weight keeps the -8 controllable, it is also a smart choice for a strong 11 year old who has outgrown the -10 but isn't ready for a -5. When in doubt, go shorter. A 30 inch -8 the hitter can whip beats a 31 inch -8 they have to push.
