QUESTION: Should I order this bat stock/untouched or Professionally Broken In?
ANSWER: Brand new baseball and softball bats need to be broken in before they perform to their full potential. Our ProMAX Break-In Service adds 20-40ft of extra distance to your solid hits, improves the durability and longevity of the bat and increases the consistency of your results on solid hits, as well. If you plan to use the bat in an official game or event, please verify the legality of our process with your league or sanctioning body before use. QUESTION: What age and size is the Icon -10 USA right for?
ANSWER: The -10 is the most common drop for USA Baseball players between 8 and 11, with a 28 or 29 inch bat fitting most 8 and 9 year olds and a 29 to 31 inch bat fitting most 10 and 11 year olds. Height and strength matter more than age, though. A quick check: have your player hold the bat straight out from their shoulder with one hand. If they can hold it steady for 20 seconds without the barrel dropping, the length and weight are in range. If the barrel drops, go down an inch. Bat speed wins at this age, so when in doubt, go shorter.
QUESTION: Is a composite bat like the Icon worth it over a cheaper alloy USA bat?
ANSWER: For a lot of hitters, yes. Under the USA standard, every bat is capped at similar peak performance, so the real differences show up on mishits and in feel. A two-piece composite like the Icon has a larger sweet spot and far less sting than a one-piece alloy, which means more playable contact and a hitter who is not afraid of the inside pitch. Alloy bats are lighter on the wallet and hold up better in cold weather, so if your player is 7 or 8 and still learning to make contact, an alloy bat is a fine place to start. Once they are squaring balls up and playing All-Stars or fall ball, the Icon is a real step up.
QUESTION: Should my player swing the Icon -10 or the -12?
ANSWER: The Icon USA also comes in a -12 for younger and smaller hitters, and the difference is two ounces at the same length. A 29 inch -12 weighs 17 ounces while a 29 inch -10 weighs 19. If your player is 8 or under, or is small for their age and still working on getting the barrel out in front, the -12 is the better fit. If they are 9 or older with a decent swing and can control the extra weight without their hands slowing down, the -10 gives them more mass behind the ball and a bat they will not outgrow by midseason.
