QUESTION: Which leagues can my player use the Icon -5 USA in?
ANSWER: The RUS7I5 carries the USA Baseball certification, which is the stamp required by Little League, Cal Ripken, Babe Ruth, PONY, Dixie Youth, and most other recreational youth leagues. That includes Little League Majors, Intermediate 50/70, and Junior League divisions. USA-stamped bats are also accepted at most USSSA events, so this bat can pull double duty for a player who does both, though it will not perform like a true USSSA 1.15 BPF bat in travel play. It is not BBCOR certified, so it is not legal for high school baseball. Always confirm your league's bat rules before buying.
QUESTION: Who should swing a -5 USA bat instead of a -8 or -10?
ANSWER: A -5 makes sense for a strong 12 or 13 year old who can swing it with the same bat speed and mechanics as a lighter drop. Under the USA standard, extra barrel mass is one of the few ways to add distance, so a hitter who can control the weight will hit the ball farther with the -5 than with a -8. The catch is that a hitter who cannot control it will lose bat speed, and losing bat speed costs more than the extra mass gives back. Compare a 31/26 Icon -5 against a 31/23 Icon -8 in the cage. If the -5 swings just as fast, it's the right bat. If it doesn't, stay in the -8 for now.
QUESTION: What is the difference between the Icon -5 USA and the Icon -5 USSSA?
ANSWER: They share the same core build: In/Tense Carbon Composite barrel, Zero Loss Technology connection, two-piece composite construction, and RevGrip. The differences come from the rulebooks. The USA version (RUS7I5) has a 2-5/8 inch barrel and carries the USA Baseball stamp, which limits barrel performance to something close to wood. The USSSA version (RUT7I5) has a 2-3/4 inch barrel and the USSSA 1.15 BPF stamp, which allows noticeably more barrel performance and is legal only in USSSA divisions that permit a -5. If your player is in a rec league, you need the USA bat. If they play USSSA travel ball in a division that allows a -5, the USSSA bat will hit hotter. Many families end up with one of each!
