QUESTION: Should I order this bat stock/untouched or Professionally Broken In?
ANSWER: Brand new baseball and softball bats need to be broken in before they perform to their full potential. Our ProMAX Break-In Service adds 20-40ft of extra distance to your solid hits, improves the durability and longevity of the bat and increases the consistency of your results on solid hits, as well. If you plan to use the bat in an official game or event, please verify the legality of our process with your league or sanctioning body before use. QUESTION: Is the Rawlings Icon -8 USA legal in Little League Majors?
ANSWER: Yes. The RUS7I8 carries the USA Baseball certification stamp, and Little League Majors and below require a USA-stamped bat with a barrel no larger than 2-5/8 inches, which this bat meets. Little League does not restrict drop weight in Majors, so the -8 is fully legal. It is also legal in Little League Intermediate and Junior divisions, Cal Ripken, Babe Ruth, PONY, and Dixie Youth. As always, check your local league's approved bat rules before game day.
QUESTION: Should my 11 or 12 year old swing the -8 or the -10?
ANSWER: Start with bat speed. If your player is already driving the ball with a -10 and finishing their swing without slowing down, the -8 will add distance without costing them anything. If they're still learning to get the barrel out front on good pitching, the -10 is the safer choice for one more season. A quick cage test settles it: swing a 30/22 Icon -8 next to a 30/20 Icon -10. If the -8 swings just as fast, buy the -8. If it does not, buy the -10 and revisit next year. Most 12 year olds pass the test. Most 10 year olds do not.
QUESTION: Can my player use the Icon -8 USA in travel ball too?
ANSWER: Usually, yes. USA-stamped bats are accepted at most USSSA events, so a player who plays rec ball during the week and travel ball on weekends can carry one bat. The trade-off is performance. The USA standard limits barrel performance to something close to wood, while USSSA 1.15 BPF bats are allowed to hit noticeably harder, so a USA bat will be at a disadvantage against a lineup full of USSSA bats. If travel ball is the priority, the Icon -8 USSSA is the better weapon. If rec ball is the priority and travel is occasional, the Icon -8 USA covers both. Many families buy both.
