Drop 12 Baseball Bats: Light Enough to Swing Fast, Big Enough to Do Damage

 

Shopping for a youth baseball bat and keep seeing "-12" on the barrel? Here's the quick version: drop is the bat's length in inches minus its weight in ounces. A 28 inch bat that weighs 16 ounces is a -12 drop. A 29 inch bat at 17 ounces is a -12. That number is how you compare how light a bat feels relative to its length, and a drop 12 baseball bat sits just one ounce heavier than the lightest bats on the market. It is the sweet spot for young hitters who are ready to move past a tee ball bat but are not yet ready for the drop 10 bats the bigger kids swing.

 

Who Should Swing a -12 Drop Bat?

 

Drop 12 bats are made for coach pitch and early kid pitch players who are starting to see real velocity for the first time. In our experience, players ages 6 through 8 typically swing 26 to 29 inch bats weighing 14 to 19 ounces, with 26"/15 oz, 27"/16 oz, and 28"/18 oz being the most popular sizes for these ages. A 27"/15 oz or 28"/16 oz drop 12 fits squarely inside that range and gives a 7 or 8 year old a little more barrel than a -13 drop without sacrificing swing speed.

 

For ages 9 and 10, we typically suggest 28 to 30 inch bats at 18 to 20 ounces, with 29"/19 oz the most popular pick, but worth noting: most players at this age have moved to drop 10 or drop 11. That makes a 29 inch drop 12 a smart choice for a smaller or lighter 9 year old who needs to keep bat speed up while building strength. Our rule for young hitters is simple: bat control beats raw power, and a lighter bat swung faster wins.

 

League Sanctions and Certification Stamps

 

Many drop 12 youth baseball bats carry the USA Baseball stamp, the bat standard used by Little League Baseball, Cal Ripken and Babe Ruth Baseball, PONY Baseball, Dixie Youth, AABC, and AAU. Drop 12 USA bats come in 2-1/4, 2-1/2, and 2-5/8 inch barrel diameters, so double check what your league allows. Travel ball families playing USSSA tournaments will need the USSSA 1.15 BPF stamp instead, and many -12 models are made specifically for that circuit.
