It is the heaviest drop in the USSSA Hype Fire lineup, packing three more ounces than the -8 at the same length, and it is the bat 13U and 14U hitters use to teach their hands what a real barrel feels like before the -3 rules kick in. QUESTION: Should I order this bat stock/untouched or Professionally Broken In?
ANSWER: Brand new baseball and softball bats need to be broken in before they perform to their full potential. Our ProMAX Break-In Service adds 20-40ft of extra distance to your solid hits, improves the durability and longevity of the bat and increases the consistency of your results on solid hits, as well. QUESTION: When is a player ready to move from a -8 to a -5?
ANSWER: When they can swing the -5 without slowing their hands or changing their mechanics. Strength and swing quality matter far more than age or size. A good test is a round of batting practice with both bats: if the -5 produces the same bat speed and the same quality of contact, the player is ready. If they start muscling it or their timing goes late, stick with the -8 for another season. Most players making the jump are 13U or 14U, but plenty of strong 12U hitters handle it fine.
QUESTION: Does the Hype Fire -5 help prepare a player for BBCOR?
ANSWER: Yes, and that is the main reason the -5 exists. A -5 sits two ounces lighter than the -3 required in high school, so a player who is comfortable with a 31/26 Hype Fire -5 will find a 31/28 BBCOR bat a manageable step instead of a shock. Keep in mind the -5 is still USSSA 1.15 BPF certified, so it is legal in USSSA travel ball only. It cannot be used in USA Baseball leagues or in high school games.
QUESTION: What is the difference between the Hype Fire -5 USSSA and the Hype Fire -5 USA?
ANSWER: They are two different bats built for two different rule sets. The USSSA version (EUT7HYP5) uses Easton's TCT barrel at 2-3/4 inches and carries the USSSA 1.15 BPF stamp. The USA version (EUS7HYP5) uses a 3D Ropecoil composite barrel at 2-5/8 inches and carries the USA Baseball stamp required by Little League, Cal Ripken, and most rec leagues. The USSSA bat will always perform hotter because the 1.15 BPF standard allows more barrel performance, so if your player is in a USSSA-sanctioned league, this is the one you want.
