The 2027 Louisville Slugger Select PWR -5 is the last stop in the USA Baseball lineup before a player picks up a BBCOR bat, and Louisville Slugger built it with that transition in mind. At 25 to 27 ounces depending on length, it swings closer to a high school bat than to the -10 most kids started with, yet it still carries the USA Baseball certification that 13 and 14 year olds need for Little League Intermediate and Junior divisions, Babe Ruth 13-15, PONY Pony division, and the many rec and travel leagues that stay on the USA standard through eighth grade. A strong seventh or eighth grader who spends a season swinging this bat will find the jump to -3 far less jarring than a teammate coming straight off a lightweight youth model.

Louisville Slugger did not simply take the -10 and pour more alloy into it. The -5 uses the same EXD Premium Alloy Barrel, whose extended length puts more hittable surface between the taper and the end cap, but the extra mass is distributed with a balanced swing weight so the bat does not feel tip-heavy in the hands of a growing player. That balance is what lets a 13 year old still cheat the barrel to a fastball on the inner half, while the heavier overall weight generates the kind of momentum that carries a well-struck ball over an outfielder's head on the bigger 50/70 and 60/90 fields! The composite handle and the VCX3 Vibration Control Connection System sit between the barrel and the hands, dampening the harsh vibration that a heavier alloy barrel would otherwise deliver on inside-out contact, while leaving enough feel that hitters learn from their misses.

The finishing details hold up under the heavier workload of an older player. The SPD-Gen2 End Cap is built from lightweight composite so the added ounces go into the barrel wall rather than the tip. The Pro Design Knob Taper gives the bottom hand a smoother contour, which matters more as hitters begin to use the knob for leverage rather than just holding on. The Premium LS Pro Comfort Grip supplies tack and cushion through long summer schedules. The 2-5/8 inch barrel meets the maximum allowed under the USA Bat standard, and the bat comes in 30, 31, and 32 inch lengths. Louisville Slugger covers it with a one year limited manufacturer warranty.

QUESTION: Should I order this bat stock/untouched or Heat Rolled with Progressive Pressure?
ANSWER: If you order your new bat Heat Rolled with Progressive Pressure, it will be delivered to you completely and evenly broken in. This process adds 20-40ft of distance to your solid hits, increases consistency, improves durability and adds 2-3 business days of lead time to your order. If you plan to use the bat in an official game or event, please verify the legality of our process with your league or sanctioning body before use. We (LongballBats.com) do not encourage the use of a Heat Rolled bat in any game or event where it is against the rules. Click here for details about our process!

QUESTION: Should I buy the Select PWR -5 or go straight to a BBCOR bat?
ANSWER: It depends on what your player's league requires. Little League Intermediate and Junior divisions, Babe Ruth 13-15, and most 13U and 14U rec leagues allow USA Baseball bats, and some require them, so a BBCOR bat may not be usable there. If the player is in one of those leagues, the -5 is the right buy, and the two ounces per length it saves versus a -3 will keep the swing quick while strength catches up. If the player is already in a league that requires BBCOR, such as high school or a BBCOR-only travel organization, skip the -5 and go to the BBCOR Select PWR. Check with your league before buying; the stamp on the bat is what the umpire looks for.

QUESTION: Is a -5 too heavy for a 12 year old?
ANSWER: For most 12 year olds in Little League Majors, yes, a -8 Drop or -10 Drop will serve them better. The -5 Drop is intended for older or physically strong players who are moving up to the 50/70 or 60/90 field, where pitching is faster and the outfield fences are farther away. A good sign a player is ready: they have been swinging a -8 for a full season, they routinely hit the ball hard to the opposite field, and they can hold the -5 straight out at arm's length for 30 seconds without the barrel dipping. If any of those are shaky, wait a season.

QUESTION: What is the difference between the Select PWR USA -5 and the Select PWR BBCOR?
ANSWER: Three things. The BBCOR bat is a -3, so it is two ounces heavier at the same length. The BBCOR version is end-loaded with a power swing weight, while the USA -5 is balanced. And the BBCOR bat uses the stiffer 3FX-PWR connection and SPD-Gen3 end cap, versus the more forgiving VCX3 connection and SPD-Gen2 end cap on the USA -5. Both share the EXD Premium Alloy Barrel, composite handle, Pro Design Knob Taper, and LS Pro Comfort Grip. In short, the USA -5 is built to be a comfortable, controllable step toward the BBCOR bat, not a copy of it.
