ANSWER: Brand new baseball and softball bats need to be broken in before they perform to their full potential. QUESTION: What is a junior big barrel bat, and who is it for?
ANSWER: A junior big barrel (JBB) bat pairs a short, light youth bat with a full 2-3/4 inch barrel, giving the youngest hitters the biggest possible sweet spot. JBB bats are built for coach pitch and machine pitch players, typically ages 5 through 7, in leagues and tournaments that allow USSSA big barrel bats. The Icon JBB comes in 25, 26, and 27 inch lengths at a -11 drop. A 25 fits most 5 and 6 year olds, a 26 fits most 6 and 7 year olds, and a 27 fits a taller 7 year old. If your player is in a USSSA coach pitch division, this is the category of bat they should be swinging.
QUESTION: Is the Icon JBB legal in Little League or rec coach pitch?
ANSWER: Usually not. The Icon JBB carries the USSSA 1.15 BPF stamp, which makes it legal in USSSA-sanctioned coach pitch, machine pitch, and junior big barrel play. It is not USA Baseball certified, so it is not legal in Little League, Cal Ripken, PONY, or other leagues that require the USA Bat stamp, and it is not a tee ball bat. If your player is in a USA-stamped rec league, look at the Rawlings Icon USA lineup (linked above) or a USA-certified tee ball bat instead. Always confirm your league's bat and barrel rules before buying.
QUESTION: Why is the Icon JBB a one-piece bat when the other Icons are two-piece?
ANSWER: Because the youngest hitters need different things. A two-piece bat with a connection joint is built to cut vibration and add feel for hitters who are already making hard contact with live pitching. A coach pitch or machine pitch hitter is facing slower, more predictable pitches and is still learning where the barrel is. A one-piece composite gives them direct feedback, holds up to the abuse a 6 year old puts on equipment, and keeps the bat light. The Icon JBB still uses the same In/Tense Carbon Composite as its big brothers, so the sweet spot and pop are all there. It just delivers them in a simpler package built for the job.
