The 2017 Rawlings Quatro BBCOR baseball bat, model BB7Q4, is the bat that put Rawlings in the composite BBCOR conversation for good. Before the Quatro, Rawlings built its high school and college reputation on one-piece alloy bats like the Velo and the 5150. The Quatro was the first fully composite BBCOR bat Rawlings ever released, and the company said it spent more than 26,000 hours of drawing, prototyping and testing before it was willing to put its name on one. Hitters didn't call it the Quatro for long. The highlighter yellow barrel with black Rawlings graphics earned it the nickname "the Glowstick" almost immediately, and that name is how most players still search for it today. It was a late release and a limited production run, which is why a new-in-wrapper BB7Q4 is one of the harder BBCOR bats to find nearly a decade later.
From a performance standpoint, the Quatro is a balanced, light-swinging, 100 percent carbon fiber composite drop 3 with a 2-5/8 inch barrel. The barrel and composite handle are joined by the Quatro Collar, a silicone-infused connection piece that Rawlings paired with its Vibration Dampening Technology (VDT). The collar does two jobs: it absorbs and deflects sting on mishits toward the hands or the end cap, and it allows a controlled amount of flex between the handle and barrel so the bat feels smooth through contact. Inside the barrel, Rawlings used an inner composite cylinder to keep the bat at the BBCOR .50 standard rather than relying on a thick barrel wall, which gives the Quatro its long sweet spot and its unusual sound. Depending on where you square it up, this bat can ping like aluminum or thump like a composite. Don't let the sound fool you, though - the ball comes off hot either way.
Who should swing the Glowstick? QUESTION: Is the 2017 Rawlings Quatro balanced or end loaded?
ANSWER: The BB7Q4 is a balanced bat, and a light-swinging one at that. Rawlings centered the mass as close to the hands as a 2 5/8 inch composite barrel allows, which is why so many reviewers describe it as feeling lighter than its listed weight. That balance is a big reason contact hitters gravitate to it, but it does not rule out power hitters. A balanced bat lets you generate more bat speed and cover more of the plate, and plenty of hitters have hit bombs with the Glowstick. If you prefer a heavier, end-loaded feel, the Quatro is probably not your bat.
QUESTION: What is the difference between the 2017 Rawlings Quatro (BB7Q4) and the 2018 Quatro (BB8Q3)?
ANSWER: Very little, and that is good news if you are hunting for the original. The 2018 Quatro uses the same 100 percent carbon fiber barrel, the same composite handle and the same silicone-infused Quatro Collar as the 2017 Glowstick. The only meaningful change Rawlings made for 2018 was a newly designed lightweight end cap that shaved a little swing weight off the barrel end and made the bat feel slightly more balanced. The 2018 also dropped the neon yellow for a darker color scheme, which is why the 2017 became the collectible of the two. If you liked the way the 2018 Quatro hit, the 2017 BB7Q4 will feel nearly identical in your hands, with the original highlighter look that started the whole Glowstick craze.
