QUESTION: How do I choose between the Villain, the Insomnia, and the Outsiders?
ANSWER: All three are built on the same 13 inch one-piece Apex platform with a one ounce end load, SRT Tacky Barrel Technology, the same four weights, and the same SSUSA, USSSA Senior, and ISA approvals. Performance and feel should be effectively identical across the three. The difference is the graphics: the Villain carries Anonymous' boldest design, the Insomnia wears the brand's modern look, and the Outsiders has a woodgrain finish that looks like an old wood bat. Pick the one you want to see in your hands, and if you already own one of the three and love it, any of the others makes a perfect backup gamer.
QUESTION: Why are senior softball bats like the Villain built one-piece instead of two-piece?
ANSWER: Two-piece bats use a connection joint between the handle and barrel to soften vibration, which is a real benefit for youth players and hitters facing hard-thrown baseballs. Senior slowpitch is different. The pitch arrives slowly, the hitter generates most of the energy, and the goal is to get as much of that energy into the ball as possible. A one-piece bat has no joint to absorb any of it, so more of the swing reaches the ball, and the hitter gets clear, immediate feedback about where the ball met the barrel. That is why nearly every serious senior bat, including the entire Anonymous lineup, is a one-piece design.
QUESTION: What do the SSUSA, USSSA Senior, and ISA approvals mean?
ANSWER: Senior softball has its own bat standards, separate from the USA and USSSA rules that govern open division slowpitch. SSUSA (Senior Softball USA) runs the largest senior circuit in the country, including the Tournament of Champions and Worlds, and its approval is the one most senior leagues follow. USSSA runs its own senior division with a separate approved list, and ISA (Independent Softball Association) sanctions senior tournaments as well. The Villain carries all three, so it is legal in the vast majority of senior play. It is a senior bat, though, and it cannot be used in USA, USSSA open division, or NSA slowpitch leagues.
