Combat’s Steel Horses drop started with BBCOR baseball bats. Now it’s got a slowpitch bat, and they gave it to Bradley Jones! The 2027 Combat MFG Steel Horses Bradley Jones CR-1, model CSU6RLTJ1L, is a one-piece USSSA bat with a 12.75 inch barrel and a half ounce end load. It’s built for the hitter who takes a full cut and wants the bat to reward it. Jones is one of the most respected power hitters in slowpitch, and Combat has put his name on a long list of CR-1 bats. This one wears the Steel Horses look: a sky blue bat with Combat’s gold script down the barrel and the Steel Horses graphics up top. It’s a cleaner, more understated finish than the Cookie Jar and Outdoor bats, and it’s the only Steel Horses slowpitch bat Combat has made so far. If you want the same Jones one-piece recipe in a different look, the 2026 Combat MFG Coastal Bradley Jones CR-1 is the sibling to compare. If you’d rather have a two-piece, the Combat Outdoor Big Barrels Bradley Jones CR-1 is the one.
Spec CR-1 is Combat’s top composite platform for slowpitch, and it’s what makes a Combat barrel sound and hit the way it does. The barrel uses triple-barrel composite construction: three composite layers built so the barrel wall flexes at contact and springs back, which spreads the response across the whole 12.75 inch hitting surface instead of one hot spot. That’s where the pop comes from, and it’s why a ball caught an inch off center still carries! The half ounce end load puts extra weight toward the end of the barrel. It adds momentum through the zone and force at contact without the slow, heavy feel of a full ounce. One-piece composite construction gives you direct feedback at contact, so you know exactly where you hit it. Combat pairs that with a mid-flex handle, which adds some give to the frame so the one-piece doesn’t feel like a fence post. The Clinch Spec Grip is Combat’s tacky wrap, and it keeps your hands locked in through a hard swing. The barrel is 2-1/4 inches. It’s approved for USSSA, NSA, and ISA play, and it is not approved for USA Softball (ASA). Available in 34 inch lengths at 25, 26, and 27 ounces, with Combat’s one year warranty.
Combat makes a lot of Bradley Jones bats, and they’re not all the same bat. Some are one-piece, some are two-piece, some are 12 inch and some are 12.75, and some are USA-stamped. Sorting that out is what we do! LongballBats.com has been the Bat Performance Experts since 2016. Our staff brings more than 100 years of combined baseball and softball experience to the slowpitch game, and we’ve had our hands on tens of thousands of bats, so we know how a one-piece CR-1 swings next to a two-piece (and which hitter belongs in each.) We carry one of the largest Combat MFG selections you’ll find, slowpitch and BBCOR, including the Steel Horses Bradley Jones, the Coastal Bradley Jones, the Ruby Richie CR-1, and the Coastal Jason Kendrick XR1 for senior ball. Sold-out Combat models land in our Rare Finds section often! Tell us which leagues you play in, what you swing now, and how you hit, and we’ll tell you straight whether the Steel Horses Jones is your bat - and which weight to carry. QUESTION: Combat makes a bunch of Bradley Jones bats. How is the Steel Horses different?
ANSWER: Mostly the look, and one spec worth checking. Combat has put Bradley Jones’ name on the Coastal, the Cookie Jar bats, the Outdoor bats, and now the Steel Horses. They all run on the Spec CR-1 triple-barrel platform with a half ounce end load. The Steel Horses is a one-piece with a 12.75 inch barrel and a mid-flex handle. The Coastal Bradley Jones CR-1 is also a one-piece, so the two swing alike, and the choice between them is which finish you want. The Outdoor Big Barrels is the two-piece in the family, with a 12 inch barrel and a stiff-flex handle, so it feels different in the hands. The Cookie Jar bats come in both USSSA and USA stamps, so check the taper. The Steel Horses is USSSA only. If you’ve swung a one-piece Jones CR-1 and liked it, the Steel Horses is that bat in a new look. If you haven’t, it’s a good place to start.
QUESTION: Is a one-piece or two-piece CR-1 better for me?
ANSWER: It depends on how you want the bat to feel when you miss. A one-piece like the Steel Horses is stiff and direct. Energy goes straight from your hands to the ball, and you get instant feedback on where you hit it. The mid-flex handle softens that a little, but a jam shot still lets you know. A two-piece like the Outdoor Big Barrels lets the handle flex on its own at contact, which smooths out the swing and takes the sting out of mishits. Hitters who square the ball up and want to feel every hit usually like the one-piece. Hitters who want a more forgiving swing, or who get stung easily, usually like the two-piece. Both carry the same Spec CR-1 barrel and the same half ounce load, so you’re not giving up pop either way. If you’re not sure, call us and tell us how you react to a mishit. That usually settles it!
QUESTION: What does the half ounce end load actually do?
ANSWER: It moves a little weight toward the end of the barrel. That changes how the bat swings more than the number suggests. A balanced 26 ounce bat swings like a 26. A 26 with a half ounce load swings a bit heavier, because the mass is farther from your hands, and it carries more momentum into the ball. That’s what you want if you already drive the ball and want more carry. The trade-off is bat speed. A loaded bat takes a little more to get through the zone, so a hitter who’s late or who gets his power from quickness is better off balanced. A half ounce is the lighter of the common loads, which is why it works for a lot of hitters who find a full ounce too much. On the Steel Horses, it’s matched to a 12.75 inch barrel, which keeps the load close enough to the hands to stay quick. Pick your weight one notch lighter than you would for a balanced bat and you’ll be in the right spot.
QUESTION: Is the Steel Horses Bradley Jones legal in my league?
ANSWER: If your league is USSSA, NSA, or ISA, yes. The Steel Horses carries all three approvals, which covers most adult tournament ball and open leagues. It is not stamped for USA Softball (ASA). That’s the one to watch, because a lot of rec leagues and church leagues follow the USA Softball list, and this bat won’t pass a bat check there. Combat makes USA-stamped Bradley Jones bats for those leagues, including the Coastal and the Outdoor Shooters Shoot in USA versions. If you play in both, you’ll want one of each. Before any tournament, check the taper for the USSSA stamp and confirm the model against your league’s current approved bat list, since lists get updated. Not sure which stamp your league follows? Call us. Reading stamps is a big part of what we do!
