TL;DR Kryo2 Empress -8: the heaviest-swinging Empress, two-piece composite, GO-EX+ barrel, VTX connection, XPND end cap, limited edition Empress art. For strong, advanced HS and college hitters. USA, USSSA, NSA, ISA, WBSC. 33-34 in. Add our ProMAX Heat Roll for maximum performance.

Three sizes, all 33 inches or longer, and nothing lighter than 25 ounces: the Kryo2 Empress -8 (WL2700601) isn’t trying to be everyone’s bat. It’s the heaviest-swinging bat in the Kryo2 Empress lineup, a two-piece composite built on the 2027 Louisville Slugger Kryo2 platform for the strong, advanced high school or college hitter who has outgrown the -9 and wants the most barrel mass Slugger puts in this bat. Like the rest of the Empress series it wears the limited edition art nouveau Empress artwork with its mystical, lunar-inspired theme, so a hitter gets a bat that looks like nothing else in the rack and swings like a serious power bat. Louisville Slugger describes the -8 as balanced, which it is in the sense that no extra weight is stacked in the end cap, but with a full 26 ounces in a 34 inch bat, the mass is there whether or not it’s labeled as a load. If you’re not sure you’re ready for it, the Kryo2 Empress -9 is the same bat with one less ounce and the same balanced build, and the Kryo2 Empress -10 is where most competitive hitters live.

Every piece of Kryo2 technology earns its keep on a -8, because a heavy composite bat with a harsh feel is a bat nobody wants to swing twice. The Kryo2 GO-EX+ Barrel System is built with new composite materials and a wider gap between the barrel’s two composite walls, which lets the outer wall flex and rebound at contact, and that flex is what gives a 26 ounce bat the soft feel and the loud, clean sound Kryo2 hitters recognize. The VTX Connection System lets the barrel and handle move independently, so the vibration from a mishit stays out of the hands even when there’s this much mass behind the swing. The XPND Performance End Cap is a patented pivot design the barrel floats on, which keeps the feel alive out toward the end of the barrel, where a power hitter who gets extended makes a lot of her best contact. The balanced swing weight means the extra ounce arrives as an ounce, not an ounce plus a load, so a hitter moving up from the -9 feels one clean step, and the premium LS Pro Comfort Grip adds tack and cushion for a secure hold on a bat that’s going to be swung hard. The barrel is 2-1/4 inches. It’s approved for USA Softball (ASA), USSSA, NSA, ISA, and WBSC play, the USA Softball stamp is the one NFHS high school programs follow, and Louisville Slugger lists the Empress -8 among the Kryo2 Empress drops approved for college play. Available in 33"/25oz, 33.5"/25.5oz, and 34"/26oz, with a one year warranty from Louisville Slugger.

The -8 is the easiest Empress to buy by mistake and the hardest one to buy correctly, because the hitter who really belongs in it is rarer than the hitter who thinks she does. That’s the fitting problem LongballBats.com has been solving since 2016 as the Bat Performance Experts. Our friendly staff brings more than 100 years of combined baseball and softball experience to the question, we’ve had our hands on tens of thousands of bats, and we carry all four drop weights of the Kryo2 Empress (-8, -9, -10, and -11) plus the standard 2027 Kryo2 and the one-piece Kryo ONE, so we can put the -8 and the -9 side by side and tell you which one your hitter should be swinging in the last at-bat of a doubleheader, not just the first. Tell us her height, weight, age, what she’s swinging now, how hard she’s hitting it, and whether she’s a fence hitter or a gap hitter, and we’ll tell you straight whether the Empress -8 is her bat or whether the -9 is the smarter buy. Call or email us and we’ll work it out!

QUESTION: Should I order this bat stock/untouched or Heat Rolled with Progressive Pressure?
ANSWER: If you order your new bat Heat Rolled with Progressive Pressure, it will be delivered to you completely and evenly broken in. This process adds 20-40ft of distance to your solid hits, increases consistency, improves durability and adds 2-3 business days of lead time to your order. If you plan to use the bat in an official game or event, please verify the legality of our process with your league or sanctioning body before use. We (LongballBats.com) do not encourage the use of a Heat Rolled bat in any game or event where it is against the rules. Click here for details about our process!

QUESTION: Who is actually ready for a -8 fastpitch bat?
ANSWER: A physically strong, experienced hitter who’s already swinging a -9 at full speed with room to spare, and who’s proven it in games, not in the cage. That usually means a varsity or college hitter with real bat speed, a mature swing, and a track record of driving the ball. The test is simple and unforgiving: if she’s swinging a -9 and is still on time against the best pitching she faces in the seventh inning of her second game of the day, she can handle a -8. If she’s ever late on good velocity with the -9, or if her swing gets long when she’s tired, the extra ounce will make both worse. A -8 also only comes in 33 to 34 inches, so a hitter who should be in a 32 isn’t a -8 candidate regardless of strength. Most high school hitters who ask about the -8 belong in the -9 or -10, and the ones who truly belong in the -8 tend to know it already. If you’re asking the question, call us and we’ll help you answer it honestly.

QUESTION: What’s the difference between the Empress -8 and the Empress -9?
ANSWER: One ounce at the same length, and the sizes available. Both are the same two-piece Kryo2 build: the GO-EX+ Barrel System, the VTX Connection System, the XPND Performance End Cap, the LS Pro Comfort Grip, the same stamps, and the same Empress artwork. Louisville Slugger describes both as balanced, so the -8 isn’t end-loaded; it’s simply a heavier bat overall, and a 34 inch -8 at 26 ounces puts more mass into the ball than a 34 inch -9 at 25. In the hand, that extra ounce on a long bat feels like more barrel, and a lot of hitters describe the -8 as the most barrel-heavy feel in the lineup even without a formal load. The Kryo2 Empress -9 comes in four sizes from 32 to 34 inches; the -8 comes in three, from 33 to 34. If your hitter is strong but still wants a quick swing, the -9 is the better bat and the safer buy. If she’s a true power hitter who wants to feel the barrel and drive the ball with mass, the -8 is the step up.

QUESTION: What does “limited edition” mean on the Kryo2 Empress, and is it a different bat?
ANSWER: It’s a limited edition colorway, not a limited edition bat. The Kryo2 Empress -8 is the 2027 Louisville Slugger Kryo2 -8 underneath: the same barrel, connection, end cap, grip, swing weight, sizes, approvals, and warranty. What’s limited is the art nouveau Empress artwork, which Slugger produced as a special run alongside the standard Kryo2 graphics. Slugger doesn’t publish a production number or individually number the bats, so “limited” means a finite run rather than a numbered collectible. The practical effect is availability: once the Empress run sells through in a given drop and size, it isn’t reprinted, so the sizes that catch on go fast, and the -8 with only three sizes is especially easy to miss. If your hitter wants the Empress look in a -8, buy the size she needs when it’s in stock. If the look isn’t the point, the standard 2027 Kryo2 -8 is the same bat and generally stays available longer.

QUESTION: Can I swing a composite -8 in cold weather, and should I keep a second bat?
ANSWER: Cold is the biggest risk to any composite fastpitch bat, and a heavy one is no exception. Composite gets stiff and brittle as the temperature drops, and that’s when barrels crack, so the standard guidance is to keep the Kryo2 Empress out of games and practices below about 60 degrees Fahrenheit, and to never hit dimpled pitching machine balls with it at any temperature. For a hitter with an early-season schedule in a cold climate, that’s a real problem, and the answer most serious players land on is a second bat: an alloy or an older composite you don’t mind swinging in March, with the Empress saved for warm-weather games and tournaments. It protects the bat you care about, it keeps the warranty intact (cold-weather damage typically isn’t covered), and it means the Empress stays at full performance for the part of the season that matters. If you want a cold-weather partner for the Empress, we carry plenty of options and can match one to her swing!
