Drop Weight 101: Size Before You Shop

Drop weight is a bat's length in inches minus its weight in ounces. A 29", 19 oz bat is a -10. The smaller the number, the heavier the bat.

Here's the general roadmap. Most 9 and 10-year-olds swing a -10 (some swing a -11). Players at 11 and 12 should move into a -8 to get ready for heavier bats down the road. At 13, a -5 is strongly recommended to build strength for the jump to BBCOR -3.

Two rules matter more than any chart. First, buy for the player you've got today, not the one you're hoping shows up next spring. A bat they'll "grow into" usually just builds bad swing habits. Second, heavier doesn't mean more power. Bat speed creates power, and a lighter bat swung fast often beats a heavier bat swung slow. Here's a quick test at home: have your player hold the bat straight out for 30 seconds. If they can't, it's too heavy.
