USA Softball certified slowpitch bats are built to a batted ball speed standard of 98 mph, and every legal bat must carry the USA Softball certification mark (or an older ASA stamp that remains approved) and stay off the non-approved bat list. That makes the USA/ASA bat market its own animal, separate from USSSA and other sanctioning bodies, and picking the right one comes down to material, construction and swing weight.

Alloy vs Composite Slowpitch Bats
Alloy USA/ASA bats are built from aluminum blends. They're durable, they perform consistently in cold weather, and they usually cost noticeably less than composite models. For recreational league players, casual weekend players, or anyone playing early spring and late fall ball, alloy (commonly referred to as simply metal) is a smart, budget-friendly choice. The tradeoff is a smaller sweet spot and a stiffer feel on mishits.
Composite USA/ASA bats are made from layered carbon fiber, and they dominate competitive slowpitch for a reason. Composite construction allows for a longer barrel, a much larger sweet spot, and precise weight distribution. Most serious USA Softball players swing composite. Just know that composite bats don't love cold weather, so many players keep an alloy bat in the bag for games below 60 degrees.
One Piece vs Multi-Piece Construction
One piece slowpitch bats are a single continuous build from knob to cap. They're stiff, they deliver maximum energy transfer, and big, strong hitters who consistently barrel the ball tend to love them. You'll feel more vibration on off-center contact, but when you square one up, nothing feels better.
Multi-piece slowpitch bats, usually two piece designs, join a separate handle and barrel. The connection point reduces hand sting and creates flex through the swing, which many players describe as a whip effect. Multi-piece bats are ideal for players who want a smoother feel, more forgiveness, and help generating barrel speed.
Endloaded vs Midloaded vs Balanced: Which Swing Weight Is Right?
Swing weight is where slowpitch bat selection really gets personal.
Endloaded bats shift extra weight, often a half ounce to two ounces, toward the end cap. That extra mass at contact means more power and more distance for hitters strong enough to control it. If you're a home run hitter with a strong, fast swing, an endload is your friend.
Balanced bats distribute weight evenly through the barrel. They swing lighter, they're easier to control, and they help contact hitters, base hitters and players with average bat speed square the ball up consistently. If you hit for average and spray line drives, go balanced.
Midloaded bats split the difference. You get some extra mass toward the barrel end without the full commitment of a true endload. Midloads suit gap hitters and all-around players who want extra pop without sacrificing bat control. If you're not sure where you fit, a midload is a great starting point.
