Every Steel Horses bat has a motto, and the Shadow Rider’s is the one that sounds most like a threat: Forged at Full Throttle. It’s the dark horse of the collection, a blacked-out two-piece hybrid with Combat in big script down the barrel, the Spec H1 mark with a lightning bolt, a black textured grip, and a black Steel Horses emblem with a red running horse near the knob. Where the Red Rider, Blue Biker, and Leather Horses are all Spec A1 one-piece alloys, the Shadow Rider is Combat’s Spec H1, which means it’s built for a different kind of hitter: the high school or college slugger who wants Combat’s barrel with a little extra mass behind it and a composite handle that takes the sting out of a jam shot. Stealthy on the rack, loud at contact! Combat built it as a limited edition, individually numbered, in four sizes.
The Spec H1 is Combat’s Half + Half construction, and the recipe is simple: keep the barrel. Change the feel. The barrel is the same premium SFX alloy that powers the Spec A1, the one-piece alloy that independent bat labs have rated at the very top of the BBCOR class, with the longer barrel and bigger sweet spot that made the Spec A1 famous. Below it, Combat swaps the alloy handle for an advanced composite handle, joined by Combat’s Triple Flex connection, designed to add flex through the swing and eliminate the sting that a stiff one-piece sends into your hands. Then Combat adds a slight end-load, a touch of barrel-end weight that builds leverage through the zone and adds distance and launch velocity on hard contact, which is exactly what a power hitter wants and exactly what the balanced Spec A1 doesn’t offer. Independent reviewers grade the H1 in the A range and describe it as the bat for hitters who want Combat’s look and barrel with more handle comfort. The Clinch Spec Grip comes pre-loaded with extra tack and just the right amount of cushion, and the sound at contact is the same unmistakable thwack that turns every head in earshot. Fully BBCOR .50 certified for high school and college play, with Combat’s full twelve month warranty.
Combat’s stated philosophy is that it would rather be the best than the best known, so every bat comes out in small, limited batches, and the Shadow Rider’s run is the only hybrid in the Steel Horses drop. QUESTION: What does “Forged at Full Throttle” mean on the Shadow Rider?
ANSWER: It’s the Shadow Rider’s motto in the Steel Horses collection, and it fits a bat built for power hitters. Forging is how you make something strong: heat it, hammer it, and don’t ease up. Full throttle is how you ride when you’ve stopped being careful. Put them together and you get the Shadow Rider’s whole attitude, a bat for the hitter who’s done the work and swings like it. It sits alongside the Red Rider’s “Firing on All Cylinders,” the Blue Biker’s “The Road Less Travelled,” and the Leather Horses’ “Iron Sharpens Iron” as the four mottos of the Steel Horses series.
QUESTION: Why would I pick the Shadow Rider over a Steel Horses Spec A1?
ANSWER: Feel and swing weight. The Spec A1 bats are stiff, balanced one-piece alloys built for bat speed, direct feedback, and the loudest contact in the lineup. The Shadow Rider is a two-piece hybrid with the same alloy barrel on top of a composite handle and Triple Flex connection, which gives it a touch of flex, far less vibration on mishits, and a slight end-load for more mass behind the ball. Hitters who want feedback, cold-weather toughness, and a quick swing pick a Spec A1. Power hitters who want extra leverage and a softer feel in the hands pick the Shadow Rider. Both are BBCOR .50 certified and both carry the Steel Horses emblem, so the choice is about your swing, not your style.
QUESTION: Is the Shadow Rider balanced or end-loaded, and what sizes does it come in?
ANSWER: Combat describes the Spec H1 as a slight end-load built into a balanced swing profile, which is the best way to understand it. It doesn’t swing like a heavy end-loaded power bat, but there’s a touch more mass toward the barrel than on a Spec A1, and a hitter moving between the two will notice the softer handle before the extra weight. On sizing, the Shadow Rider comes in 31, 32, 33, and 33.5 inches. It does not come in a 34, so if you swing the longest BBCOR length, look at the Steel Horses Spec A1 models, which run through 34. Most high school hitters land in a 32 or 33, and we’re happy to help you choose.
