2027 Combat MFG Steel Horses BBCOR Baseball Bats: Spec A1 vs. Spec H1, Release Date and Which One YOU Should Swing
Posted by The Experts at LongballBats.com on Oct 7th 2026
Combat MFG has been to the rodeo, the country club, the cookie jar and the beach lately. Now the most talked-about limited-drop brand in BBCOR baseball is kicking over a motorcycle! The 2027 Combat Steel Horses BBCOR drop arrives in mid-October with four new bats: three Spec A1 one-piece alloy designs and one Spec H1 two-piece hybrid. If you've watched an earlier Combat drop sell out while you were still typing in your zip code, you know why people are already setting alarms.
We've gone through everything Combat has released about Steel Horses so far. Below is what's confirmed, what's still under wraps, how the Spec A1 and Spec H1 differ, and which one fits YOUR swing!

What Is the Combat Steel Horses BBCOR Drop?
Steel Horses is Combat's motorcycle-culture collection. Combat describes it as a celebration of staying true to yourself, embracing the open road and chasing more power, which is about as good a mission statement as a BBCOR bat can have.
The baseball side of the drop is four bats. Three are different designs on the Spec A1 one-piece alloy platform, and the fourth is a new design on the Spec H1 two-piece hybrid. Steel Horses apparel and accessories launch alongside the bats, and Combat says a Steel Horses slowpitch softball lineup with new one-piece and two-piece bats will follow in the weeks after.
One thing we want to be straight about: as of this writing, Combat hasn't published the officially official individual design names, colorways, prices or size runs for the four Steel Horses bats. For reference, Combat's most recent drop, the surf-themed Coastal Collection, priced its Spec A1 bats at $349.99 and its Spec H1 at $399.99. We'll update this post the moment the Steel Horses details go public.
Update 10/08/2026: Combat MFG has published specific details about each of the four upcoming releases from the Steel Horses collection:

Combat Steel Horses Release Date and How the Drop Works
Combat has only said "mid-October" so far, with no exact day announced. What they have laid out is how launch day runs on their own website, and it's worth knowing before you plan your morning around it.

Hitters who sign up for Combat's VIP access get a link to a virtual waiting room at 9:30 a.m. Eastern. The bats go live at 10:00 a.m. Eastern, and everyone in the waiting room is placed in the queue at random. Showing up at 9:31 gives you the same odds as showing up at 9:59. Anyone who didn't sign up joins at the back of the line, and Combat is clear that a spot in the queue doesn't hold or guarantee a bat.
After that, Combat says the Steel Horses BBCOR bats start reaching retailers the following day, with more select retailers getting them in the days after. If you miss the first wave, don't panic! Missing the first ten minutes isn't the same as missing the bat.
The Spec A1: Three New One-Piece Alloy Steel Horses Bats
The Spec A1 is the bat that put Combat MFG back in the dugout conversation, and three of the four Steel Horses bats are built on it. It's a one-piece alloy BBCOR bat with a 2-5/8 inch barrel and a drop 3 (-3) length to weight ratio.
The headline tech is the SFX barrel. Combat says its engineering process produces a longer barrel and a bigger sweet spot than any other one-piece alloy, and the long barrel profile is the first thing most hitters notice when they pick one up. Combat lists the swing weight as balanced, built for fast swing speeds without giving up barrel performance.
The feel is stiff, the way a one-piece should be, though Combat pitches it as having forgiveness closer to a two-piece. Every Spec A1 comes wrapped in Combat's Clinch Spec Grip, which is tackier than most stock grips and has a little cushion to it. Then there's the sound - a squared-up ball off a Spec A1 is loud enough that the next field over knows about it.
The most recent Spec A1 drop came in 31, 32, 33, 33.5 and 34 inch lengths. That half-inch size is a nice touch for hitters stuck between a 33 and a 34.
The Spec H1: The Steel Horses Hybrid
The Spec H1 is Combat's two-piece hybrid and the newer of the two platforms. It was the first two-piece BBCOR bat Combat MFG ever released, debuting in 2026 in the Cookie Jar "Cookies & Cream" colorway and returning in the Coastal Collection as the "Uluwatu." Steel Horses will be its third appearance.
The recipe is simple. Take the same SFX alloy barrel that made the Spec A1 famous and join it to a composite handle. The H1 has been listed with Combat's SpeedFlex composite handle and Triple Flex connection, and the point of both is the same: more flex through the zone and a lot less sting in your hands when you miss the sweet spot.
Swing weight is where the H1 separates itself. Combat describes it as a mid-load, and third party reviewers call it a slight end-load with more comfort than the Spec A1. Either way, there's more mass out toward the barrel than you'll feel in the A1.
Two things to know going in. Both earlier Spec H1 releases were originally priced at $399.99, fifty dollars more than the A1, and both came in only 32 and 33 inch lengths.

Spec A1 vs. Spec H1: The Differences, and What's Changed for 2027
Both bats share the SFX alloy barrel, the 2-5/8 inch diameter, the drop 3 weight, the Clinch Spec Grip and a one-year manufacturer's warranty. Past that, they're different animals.
- Construction: The Spec A1 is a single piece of alloy from knob to end cap. The Spec H1 is two pieces, with an alloy barrel and a composite handle.
- Feel: The A1 is stiff and gives you honest feedback on every swing. The H1 flexes more and takes the edge off mishits.
- Swing weight: The A1 is balanced. The H1 carries a mid-load.
- Sizes and price: The A1 has offered the wider size run and the lower price in every drop so far.
Now for the question we get most: what did Combat change from the earlier bats? Based on everything published so far, the answer is the paint. Combat's Steel Horses announcement is all about the designs and the theme, and it doesn't mention any new barrel, handle or end cap technology. That matches how every Combat drop has worked. Rodeo, Country Club, Midnight Rodeo, Performance, Outdoor, Cookie Jar and Coastal were all the same Spec A1 underneath, and many independent reviews of the line say the documented differences between editions come down to graphics, model codes and available sizes.
Here at Longball, we don't see that as a knock. The Spec A1 earned its reputation on performance, and Combat has been smart enough to leave a good barrel alone. What has moved over time is price: the original Rodeo bats were $299.99, and the drops since have been $349.99. If Combat announces a genuine spec change for Steel Horses on launch day, we'll add it here.
Are Combat Steel Horses Bats BBCOR Certified?
Yes. Combat is releasing all four Steel Horses baseball bats as BBCOR bats, and both the Spec A1 and Spec H1 platforms are BBCOR .50 certified with the required drop 3 weight and 2-5/8 inch barrel. That's the standard for NFHS high school baseball and NCAA college baseball. Neither platform is made in a USSSA or USA Baseball version, so these are bats for high school and college-age hitters.
College players should check one extra detail, and it's about color. On the original Rodeo drop, Combat noted that one orange colorway was fully BBCOR certified and approved for high school play but was not approved for NCAA or NJCAA games, while the other colorways in that same drop were cleared at every level. The bats were built identically. If you play college ball, read the product page for the specific Steel Horses design you want before you buy.
Which Steel Horses Bat Should You Swing?
Swing the Spec A1 if you make your living on bat speed and barrel control. Contact hitters, gap-to-gap guys, leadoff types and anyone who grew up on one-piece alloy will feel at home right away. The balanced swing weight lets you stay short to the ball, and the stiff build sends everything you've got straight into the baseball. It's also the pick for hitters who want honest feedback, because a one-piece tells you exactly where you made contact.
Swing the Spec H1 if you're a stronger hitter who can handle some extra mass in the barrel and wants to turn it into carry. The mid-load rewards a hitter who's already driving the ball, and the composite handle is a real gift on cold-weather mishits. If you like the Combat barrel but one-piece sting has always bugged you, the H1 is your bat.
If you're not sure which camp you're in, go A1. A balanced bat is the safer bet for most high school hitters, and you can't drive a ball you're late on.
On sizing, our data-driven BBCOR recommendations break down as follows:
- Ages 13 to 14: 31 to 32 inches, with 32 inch/29 ounce the most popular size
- Ages 15 to 16: 32 to 33 inches, with 33 inch/30 ounce the most popular size
- Ages 17 and up: 33 to 34 inches, with 33 inch/30 ounce the most popular size
Every BBCOR bat is a drop 3, so length is the only decision you're making. Our advice is to buy for the hitter's size today instead of one he'll grow into, and to try a simple test: hold the bat straight out for 30 seconds. If you can't, it's too heavy. Keep in mind that the Spec H1 has only come in 32 and 33 inch lengths so far, so a hitter who fits a 31 or a 34 has been an A1 hitter by default.

Combat Steel Horses BBCOR: Popular Questions and Answers
QUESTION: When do the Combat Steel Horses BBCOR bats come out?
ANSWER: Combat has announced a mid-October release on its own website, with the bats going live at 10:00 a.m. Eastern on launch day. Retailers begin receiving them the following day. An exact date hasn't been announced yet. Want to be the first to know when they release? Contact us and get on our launch list!
QUESTION: How many bats are in the Combat Steel Horses drop?
ANSWER: Four BBCOR baseball bats. Three are Spec A1 one-piece alloy designs and one is a Spec H1 two-piece hybrid. Steel Horses apparel and accessories launch with them, and a slowpitch softball lineup follows in the weeks after.
QUESTION: What's the difference between the Combat Spec A1 and the Spec H1?
ANSWER: The Spec A1 is a stiff, balanced one-piece alloy bat. The Spec H1 pairs that same alloy barrel with a composite handle in a two-piece hybrid design, with a mid-load swing weight and less vibration on mishits.
QUESTION: Is the Spec H1 just a Spec A1 with a new paint job?
ANSWER: No. Different colorways of the Spec A1 are the same bat with different graphics, but the H1 is a real construction change. The composite handle and two-piece connection give it a different feel and a heavier swing weight.
QUESTION: Are Combat Steel Horses bats legal for high school and college?
ANSWER: They're being released as BBCOR bats, which is the standard for NFHS high school and NCAA college play. College players should confirm the specific colorway is approved for NCAA or NJCAA games, because Combat has had a colorway restricted at the college level before.
QUESTION: Is the Combat Spec A1 balanced or end-loaded?
ANSWER: Combat lists the Spec A1 as balanced, and independent reviews agree. You'll see some retailer listings call it end-loaded, which may be the long barrel talking. If you want the Combat bat with more barrel weight, that's the Spec H1.
QUESTION: How much will the Combat Steel Horses bats cost?
ANSWER: Combat hasn't posted Steel Horses pricing yet. In the Coastal Collection drop, the Spec A1 bats were $349.99 and the Spec H1 was $399.99, each with a one-year manufacturer's warranty and a limit of two per order on Combat's site.
