The overwhelming majority of USSSA slowpitch bats are full composite, and for good reason. Layered carbon fiber lets manufacturers build long barrels with huge sweet spots and dial in exact swing weights, which is exactly what the 1.20 BPF standard rewards. Alloy still earns a roster spot, though. Aluminum barrels shrug off cold weather, last a long time, and come in at friendlier prices. Plenty of experienced players keep a metal bat in the bag for chilly early season games and save the composite gamer for warm weather, since carbon fiber and cold temperatures are a bad mix.
One Piece Power vs Multi-Piece Feel
Construction changes how a bat behaves at contact. A one piece design is a single unit from knob to end cap, and its stiffness sends energy straight into the ball. Strong hitters who barrel everything up gravitate here, accepting a little extra sting on mishits as the cost of doing business.
Multi-piece bats, most commonly two piece designs, use a connection system between the handle and barrel. That joint soaks up vibration and lets the barrel flex and whip through the zone.
